Citibank Debit Cards
These days, most people have debit cards. They appreciate the convenience of not having to write a check to buy groceries, being able to pay at the pump at gas stations without using a credit card, even using a debit card when dining out! (Sometimes you just don't have time to hit the ATM before meeting friends at a restaurant for dinner.)
And speaking of the ATM, most ATM cards will only allow you to withdraw $300 a day from your account. Inevitably, you'll be traveling sometime and need to get more than that, and unless you have a debit card, you'll have to get cash back from a purchase when writing a check or wait. (Or go to a check cashing place and pay astronomical fees.) But debit cards allow you to withdraw more than that. Some go as high as $2,500 or the amount that's in your checking account (whichever is less).
A Rewarding Shopping Experience
Some debit cards (like Citibank debit cards and Chase debit cards) are offering attractive rewards programs. While most of these programs focus on airfare, you can find debit card rewards programs that will let you have other rewards. Citibank has an airfare rewards program that allows you to earn one American Airlines Advantage mile for every $2 you spend. The catch? A $25 annual fee, and it doesn't apply to purchases you make using your PIN number. They want you to sign the pad instead of putting in your PIN. Not unreasonable. They even have a premium card that allows you to earn one mile for every dollar, in effect getting your free airfare sooner. But this card has an annual fee of $65. At that point, you might want to decide if it's really worth it.
